The mission of the School Nutrition Program (SNP) is to provide the students of RSU 3 opportunities to make sound decisions in selecting high quality, nutritious meals they enjoy. In order to bolster academic performance and the wellness of our students, great effort is taken to plan nutritious and delicious meals for our students which the SNP staff skillfully prepares.

Community Eligibility Provision

Community eligibility provision (CEP) is the newest opportunity for schools with high percentages of low-income children to provide breakfast and lunch AT NO COST to all students regardless of income. It increases participation by children in the school meal programs, reduces labor costs for schools, and increases federal revenues. In short, it allows for a healthier student body and a healthier school meal budget.

However, the continuatio of this program is based entirely on participation in the meal program. If there is not a high enough level of participation, then we will resume the previous method of requiring payment for the meals. All students will recieve a free reimbursable breakfast and lunch, regardless of previous eligibility. A la carte items, such as bottled water, extra entrees, and vending machine snacks, and adult meals still have a cost.

FAQ about the CEP:

-Is everything free?

  • No, the meals are not an “all you can eat” buffet style service, and must meet the requirements of an reimbursable meal. All students receive 1 reimbursable breakfast and 1 reimbursable lunch at no cost. The meal must meet minimum meal requirements. Meals that do not meet the minimum requirements  or extra entrees or items will be charged as individual a la carte items.

-Breakfast Components: Grains, Fruit, Milk, Meat/Meat Alternative (optional). Breakfast must have a minimum of 3 components.

-Lunch Components: Grains, Meat/Meat Alternative, Fruit, Vegetable, and Milk. Lunch must have 3 out of 5 components.

-Any additional items will be charged as a la carte items.

-A la carte item example: extra entrees, bottled water, milk with a home lunch, or bags of snacks not included in lunch meals. A LA CARTE ITEMS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO CHARGE ON ACCOUNTS WITH A NEGATIVE BALANCE. Cash, check, or credit/debit card (via Paypal) are accepted at the time of purchase or to add to an account for future purchases of a la carte items.

-Will my taxes go up?

No. The funding formula changes and increases federal subsidy. The SNP receives $50,000 to support the nutrition of our students, which will not change with the CEP.  The key with the CEP is increased participation to make it financially viable for our district. This is the purpose of the pilot to ensure there will be no negative impact on the district or our families.

-Will the meals decrease in quality?

No. The meals and choices for lunch will remain the same. We are hopeful that with less administrative burden, we can do more scratch cooking and creative menu planning. We will continue our focus on Farm to School initiatives, scratch cooking within the confines of the federal regulations, and Smarter Lunch room initiatives.

The Facebook page is intended to share stories and pictures with parents as well as provide up to date information on changes in the menu (rare occasion), field trip and meals, and our Farm to School initiatives.



Elementary students are offered two entree choices each day. Middle and High School students are offered many options every day. A la carte items are available for purchase to students in grades 6-12. As part of the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010, students will be required to choose a fruit and/or vegetable component  for breakfast and lunch to qualify as a reimbursable meal. Under Offer vs. Serve, students must take 3 out of 4 items at breakfast and 3 out of 5 components offered at lunch. These components are: Meat/ Meat Alternative, Grain, Fruit, Vegetable and Milk. Therefore, some items offered (i.e. Breakfast Sandwich, meat & grain components) will qualify as two components.

Every day we offer a nutritious and delicious breakfast and lunch to our students. Our meals meet or exceed the nutrient standards set by the Federal Government. Menus are sent home with all elementary students and are also posted on the District’s web site. School Nutrition Program staff members prepare and serve meals which exceed increasingly demanding national and local nutrition standards to safeguard the health and well-being of all our children as mandated by the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act.

The School Nutrition Program aims to promote healthy eating habits for life by providing nutritious meals to the student of RSU 3. All grains, pastas, and breads served to students are whole grain rich. There is also at least 2 fresh fruit and vegetable choice on the menu daily. Monthly menus reflect diversity and creativity to appeal to student appetites. In addition to the main meal, a variety of options for breakfast, lunch and ala carte are available to students at the junior high and high school levels.

There has been a significant increase in breakfast participation at the elementary, junior high school, and now high school through the success of the Universal Breakfast program. The program provides students in grades BR-12 with a healthy breakfast at no cost regardless of income eligibility. Fresh fruits and vegetables are also provided to all students as a snack in grades BR-8 at no cost as part of the Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program.

We continue to explore new Farm to School relationships and recycling programs in conjunction with local farmers, Unity Barn Raisers and our own student group, Peace Jam, to provide children with fresh, locally grown produce, meat, and eggs when available. This year, we have partnered with 13 area farms and will continue to partner with local farms to expand farm fresh food in the cafeteria.

Payment Information

You may send in money for school meals on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis. All students will have a school nutrition account into which funds are deposited and may be used for a la carte item purchase. An electronic credit/debit card option is available through PayPal. To use PayPal, click the link at the bottom of this page. 

If a student account is at or above negative $10.00, the student will not have choice for their lunch. The student will recieve a bagged lunch that has a cheese swandwich, fruit, vegetable, and a milk until payment is received for the account. 

If a check is returned due to insufficient funds, a $10.00 service charge will be added to the amount owed. This is the fee that the bank charges our account.

Note: Any payment with a debit/credit card will have paypal fees deducted from it. The fees are 30 cents per transaction and 2.9% of the amount paid.
For example: if you pay $20 by credit/debit card, there will be 88 cents in paypal fees and $19.12 will be added to your account.
