Engineers Teaching Algebra at MVMS

8th grade students had the opportunity to participate in active hands-on problem solving using "old-school" technology (e.g., on paper with pencil, a good eraser and a lot of ideas) with an engineer this week. Mark Love, a civil engineer, came to us from New Hampshire with the objective of showing the everyday value of algebra and to encourage the pursuit of math and science. Students worked with fractions, ratios and percentages, proportional reasoning, applying variables to develop equations to work with varying conditions and applying traditional problem solving. This group of students enjoyed learning from Mr. Love so much that we are planning on having him come back later in the year for the rest of the 8th grade students. This was such a great learning experience for our students to learn some real life application of algebra!
